Mathematics

Different levels of mathematics are offered at High Point to support the diverse ways in which students learn and understand mathematical concepts. There is a comprehensive evaluation process for seventh-grade mathematics placement, which considers performance on a math placement test, ERB scores, and sixth-grade teacher evaluations. After careful evaluation of these factors, students are placed in either Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1 as seventh-grade students. Those who take Pre-Algebra will take Algebra 1 as eighth graders. Those who take Algebra 1 in seventh grade advance to Geometry in eighth grade. Both the Algebra 1 and the Geometry courses are equivalent in content to those offered at the high-school level.

Pre-Algebra topics include the following: equations, transformations, angles and triangles, graphing and writing linear equations, systems of linear equations, functions, real numbers and the Pythagorean theorem, volume and similar solids, data analysis and displays, and exponents and scientific notation.

Algebra topics include the following: solving linear equations, graphing and writing linear equations, solving linear inequalities, solving systems of linear equations, linear functions, exponential equations and functions, polynomial equations and factoring, graphing quadratic functions, solving quadratic equations, rational equations and functions, and data analysis and displays.

Geometry topics include the following: basics of geometry, reasoning and proofs, parallel and perpendicular lines, transformations, congruent triangles, relationships within triangles, quadrilaterals and other polygons, similarity, right triangles and trigonometry, circles, circumference and area, surface area and volume, and probability.
