Mathematics

Three different levels of mathematics are offered at High Point in recognition of the different rates at which students grasp the subject matter. At the end of the sixth-grade year students take a mathematics placement exam. Those results are combined with ERB scores and sixth-grade teacher recommendations to place students in either Math 7, Pre-Algebra, or Algebra 1 as seventh-grade students. Those who take Math 7 will continue to Pre-Algebra in eighth grade. Seventh grade students who take Pre-Algebra will take Algebra 1 as eighth graders. Finally, those who take Algebra 1 in seventh grade advance to Geometry in eighth-grade. Both the Algebra 1 and the Geometry courses are equivalent in content to those offered at the high-school level.

Math 7 topics include: integers, rational numbers, expressions and equations, inequalities, ratios and proportions, percents, constructions and scale drawings, circles and areas, surface area and volume, and probability and statistics.

Pre-Algebra topics include the following: equations, transformations, angles and triangles, graphing and writing linear equations, systems of linear equations, functions, real numbers and the pythagorean theorem, volume and similar solids, data analysis and displays, and exponents and scientific notation.

Algebra topics include the following: solving linear equations, graphing and writing linear equations, solving linear inequalities, solving systems of linear equations, linear functions, exponential equations and functions, polynomial equations and factoring, graphing quadratic functions, solving quadratic equations, rational equations and functions, and data analysis and displays.

Geometry topics include the following: traditional euclidean geometry (triangles, quadrilaterals, congruence, similarity, circles, angles, lines, planes, surface area, volume), coordinate geometry and transformations in the coordinate plane, reasoning and proof, angle relationships, trigonometry, and probability.
