Advice from Mrs. Neville on How to Keep Your Child Reading Over the Summer Months

everybody here at the High Point Library I wanted to make a little video for you to help you to help your kids keep reading throughout the summer there's so many great ways to do that and I wanted to share them with you so the goal of course is to make it a treat and not a chore we don't want to make it something they have to do and that's unpleasant or negative in any way there's so many ways to make it positive and exciting and something that they really want to do one of the main things I do each year to support that is I make a summer reading list so I've been doing it in an Amazon wish list format for the past couple years so I make they're all books that I know and love I pick new ones and Classics in a mix of things and the lists are all they're labeled Rising first fits through Rising 6th meaning kids going into per second in junior high. They're almost which is why I let it die I'll leave that to them so they're only appropriate books of course and they are a great Friday dozens of books on each list there be a big section of fiction a section of nonfiction and poetry and graphic novels again to get them if they've been you know just reading a certain time maybe try something else then just keep it just like you know eating a variety of foods you want them to try a variety of genres and types of books and different authors and all sorts of things keep things keep a spark going so those are there are you there on my teacher page they will be an eagle mail for the next few weeks and because their Amazon Amazon wish list you can of course by the books from Amazon if you do please make sure you link you can you can do the Amazon smile option and make sure you clink hype as your charitable organization so that every bookie by will learn a little bit of money for the school if you'd rather support local bookstores that's amazing as well and then you can still open my list and just scroll through them at the store and refer to them as you buy them at Romans or wherever where to go if you don't want to buy anything at all you can go to public library what you want and honestly what I do I tend to borrow books more offended by then I go to the public library all the time it's an incredible resource so there's so many things I want to tell you about the public library so you can save hundreds or thousands of dollars you can of course good books to read for free a lot of people don't know you can also get ebooks and electronic books you can download them read them on your Kindle audiobooks those are amazing for road trips family road trips or Ian obviously let him listen to travel to Summer audiobooks for so much fun and you can download them all for free the library lot of times people that use it because they're afraid they're going to forget to return their books and learn a lot of fees the library makes it so easy now they will Auto renew things didn't get an email saying your book is due and they've already renewed it for you they will auto return things for you if it's not a physical book if it's an ebook on audiobook it'll just automatically return you can go online and request books at them to ship it to whatever your local branches. most convenient for you at no cost they will transfer them like the Pasadena Public Library is a sister system with Glendale so from any of those any of those shelves that can grab whatever book you want shipping to the to the branch that's convenient for you it's just there for a week email you the whole way to come pick it up if you don't pick it up no big deal they don't penalize you they took those back on the shelf and then you just I just literally run until I buy grab the book or the self-checkout machine and out of there in two minutes it's the make it so easy the other amazing thing that the the library doesn't save course run a summer reading program for all ages they do one for little kids at 12 and under that you want for teens and they even do one for adults so tons of incentives and prizes to give away free books and and little gadgets and prizes something Samba gadgets and things and they have incredible dancer program so they'll have magic shows and wild animal shows and crafting events and gaming events and like anything is possible in with the summer reading program so they really jack up these are the entertainment Factor during the summer 9 the people are more available to come and enjoy this things that they have to offer so even if you don't have time to go to the library Lee or take part regularly in a summer reading program Jessica wants to get a library card and then you can reap the benefits for years you can have that library card and then just just do ebooks and audiobooks and never said for the library in if you don't want to or you don't have time it's something Library systems even have an option to do a digital library card just I never said for the library to sign up for the digital library card and then you can access their databases and their magazines and every books not able to solve the digital resources so they make it so easy in there just really an incredible resource that all of us should be should be utilizing what else can I tell you what I know it's here relaxing readers so how can we help them sometimes it's a matter of finding a genre that really Sparks on you know fantasy or historical fiction or whatever excites them certain author they make it home the series is great if they could come down because I can keep them busy for a while it's a Simpson as a matter of finding you know what that can be a couple of things that often work really well for reluctant readers are nonfiction sometimes fiction just doesn't do it for them and nonfiction might really excite them isn't that much more elevated because it's all real and facts and things that might really blow their minds graphic novels are magic it's like you know a plate of spinach with a spoonful of sugar they don't they're taking in and they can be nonfiction to don't forget they can be Memoirs or set in times of history or science based fiction or nonfiction they're amazing as our comic book so frequently local comic store in you can have graphic novels or comic books there as well why we has all those resources as well read aloud to the kids even if they're old or even if they're in junior high even adults left to be read aloud to really magical thing so if you can read a whole bunch together as a family fantastic if you can listen to it as a naughty but kind of wonderful maybe can only manage to just read one chapter that's fine read the first chapter together get them hooked on it you know and then they're off they read the read the rest on their own so that's a great way to come open the door right for that what system if you want if your family likes that sort of thing that's sometimes really motivating so you can me know every book he read will go out for frozen yogurt or will allow you can pick a an outing that you want to do any any kind of reward system that you want that might really excited and motivate the kids the model I'm show them that reading is a pleasure let's put our phones down Western up the computer a little more often let's grab a book and show them that reading is a treat it's a pleasure it's something that you look forward to in that you put as a priority in your life if you're t.i. to kids who are now 12 and 14 you can create a couple of monsters like I have I have kind of the opposite extreme but believe me I'm thrilled to have you know a problem in my house which is I have to contact tell my kids to stop reading until the students this all the time and I think it's hilarious but it's true my kids will not put there so we go to the public library we come home and they will not get out of the car and I'll sit in the car for about an hour in the driveway just keep reading and finally on my put your book down and go do your chores and then it's time for dinner and then we'll come to the dinner table and then put your books down because you know they won't stop so I'm asking them to put the book down it's bedtime there reading they need to get ready for bed and read afterward and so sweet I mean a reading should be for us it's like a reward at the end they have to take care of business first but I'm kind of like telling them to put their books down which is ridiculously funny ironic that are Librarians telling their kids to do that but and it's obviously a great problem to have so I wish that I would have problems but I mean if you have any questions or thoughts please come see me I can help you I was a couple of this website's a couple of mention they're useful for ideas for books BiblioNasium is like a good reads for kids so lots of they can kind of keep an electronic shelf of what they want to read them when they have read and made do reviews and things and your friends at the Funny Bone azium and there's another one called a book APA list and you can choose you know genres in ages and you can give you read Alex if you like this it might also like that so those are good sites to look at don't forget my teacher page I have in addition to the summer so many resources I have more websites on ideas for how to find good books I have lots more reading list that are just generally reading list by age and grade and just go to check it out there's a lot of great resources on there
