Letter from Mr. Stern

Dear High Point Community,

It is with a heavy heart I share my difficult decision to step down as High Point's Head of School at the end of the 2020-2021 school year in June 2021. Recent significant changes in personal, family-related circumstances and commitments caused me to reevaluate and realign my professional trajectory. More specifically, my father’s health status requires me to dedicate substantial time to help enhance his well-being. In light of this, after considerable deliberation and reflection, I reached the conclusion that I will not be able to balance my responsibilities as the head of school with my personal commitments and that High Point would therefore benefit from new leadership at the head of school position. Accordingly, the next chapter in my professional journey will not involve a head of school position.

Bidding farewell to a community I cherish is incredibly difficult. I have been blessed to work in partnership and collaboration with a dedicated and visionary Board of Trustees, an exceptional and collaborative administrative leadership team, a devoted faculty and staff who are second to none, and a highly supportive and caring parent community. With such strength of leadership and community, High Point is well-positioned to continue to fulfill its noble mission and further enhance its stellar reputation in the independent school arena.

It has been a great honor to serve as High Point's Head of School since June 2015, and I am hopeful High Point finds itself in a stronger position today than when I began my journey. I am immeasurably grateful to High Point's Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, staff, and parents for entrusting me with the mantle of leadership and for their steadfast support and partnership. I have cherished the treasured human relationships with faculty, administration, staff, trustees, and parents that define High Point's caring, close-knit community. Of particular note, I have relished the opportunity to interact with High Point's inspirational and amazing students. The highlight each day has been personally greeting students entering High Point's campus to embark upon new adventures in their educational journey.

At its core, High Point is and will always be about the students. I am proud High Point's mission to awaken the joy of learning, foster academic excellence, and nurture the development of the Whole Child (social, emotional, academic, ethical) resonates as profoundly today as during the school's founding fifty-five years ago. In the coming months, I will dedicate myself wholeheartedly to work in close collaboration with the Board of Trustees, the administrative team, faculty, staff, and the High Point community to effectively navigate the remainder of the current school year and ultimately to ensure a smooth and seamless leadership transition.

High Point will always occupy a special place in my heart. At its core, High Point is a uniquely down-to-earth, compassionate, and welcoming community committed to optimizing each student's educational experience and overall development. I am confident High Point's best days are ahead. Going forward, High Point Eagles will soar ever higher in “living” the school's compelling and transformative mission to awaken the joy of learning in students today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.

With deep appreciation and gratitude,

Gary Stern
