This is a friendly reminder that beginning in the 2019-2020 school year 5th and 6th grade students will start the school day promptly at 8:15 aminstead of 8:30 am. The 8:15 am start time aligns with the start time for HPA’s 7th and 8th grade students and will result in an additional one hour and 15 minutes of instructional time each week.
Discussions and deliberations with our 5th and 6th grade faculty highlighted the following benefits of the earlier start time:
- Students will continue to have robust instructional time in the core curriculum areas (language arts, math, social studies, and science) and ample time for enrichment experiences in PE, vocal music, visual arts, library, world languages, and instrumental music.
- An advisory period will be introduced in 5th and 6th grades to provide students with a forum to further foster their social, emotional, and character development.
- Overall, aligning the start time for 5th and 6th grades with the 7th and 8th grades will help facilitate the smooth transition of HPA students into our junior high program.
- Ultimately, additional instructional time will enhance HPA’s ability to deliver a well-balanced and challenging program that awakens the joy of learning in students and supports their academic, social, emotional, ethical, creative, and physical development.
